Summer Internship

C. Burns, Alaska Chadux
Contract Term: 05/01/16 – 09/01/16
Award: $15,000

Scope of Work:

The Alaska Chadux Corporation (ACC) intends to host an intern from May 1, 2016, until September 1, 2016. This person will be recruited from outside the oil spill response industry (i. e a student looking to enter the field or an individual looking to change careers). Chadux will provide training and work experience to introduce the individual to components of the response industry including planning, incident management, response logistics, response tactics, safety, and environmental issues.

The overall objective of this internship is to introduce an individual to the petroleum response industry and provide them with the basic qualifications to work as a spill response technician in the state of Alaska. This includes appropriate training under OSHA’s Hazard Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standard (29 CFR 1910. 120) and training and handson experience with standard marine spill response equipment. Since onwater response activities are only a small part of spill response, this internship is intended to expose the individual to all elements of the response process. Individuals will receive accredited incident management training, learn to develop and promote a safe working environment, and have an opportunity to receive logistics training. The end result of the internship should provide an individual with abroad background in incident response who could fill a variety of roles during a spill response.

Chadux’s proposed internship directly addresses three of OSRI’s organizational goals.

Respond: enhance the ability of oil spill responders to mitigate impacts of spills. . . . Chadux’s intern will be well versed in all aspects of spill response operations, rather than just being trained as a field technician. This will allow the individual to fill a variety of roles in addressing the impact of oil spills in Alaska.

Inform: educate the public on the issues of oil spill response. . . . Chadux’s intern will be a new recruit to the field. By the end of the internship, the intent is to add an additional capable responder to the response community through training and practical experience.

Partner: partner with other organizations to take advantage of shared knowledge and experience. . . . Chadux’s intern will have the opportunity to work and train alongside representatives from other response organizations, regulatory bodies, and member companies. The individual will observe how other response organizations implement response strategies, how regulatory personnel provides oversight during responses, and how the regulated community prepares for responses.
