Testing Oleophilic Skimmer Improvements

E. Haugstad, Tesoro
Contract Term: 07/01/08 – 12/31/08
Award: $20,000

Scope of Work:

In earlier tests of oil recovery skimmers an emergent technology was identified as needing further development and testing. It was felt that this technology had the promise of greatly increasing the oil recovery rate while reducing the amount of entrained water. The prototype skimmer uses a new oleophilic surface that may be adaptable to existing equipment. Tesoro, Cook Inlet Spill Prevention and Response Inc, Alaska Clean Seas, and the Oil Spill Recovery Institute agreed to partner in funding the desired improvements to the prototype skimmer and to retest it using standardized testing protocols.
